Research at the Buchanan Co. Public Library:

The public library has a great selection of local history and family history items in its collection.  Stop by and see what the library has to offer.

 

  Birth Records:
BCPL has only limited birth records.

 

 
Death Records:
BCPL has some of the early death records in our genealogy section.  In addition, we also have funeral home records of several of the local funeral homes in the area.

Land Grant Records:

Land grants can be viewed online through the Library of Virginia's Digital Collections Project.

By Family Name:  [Complete the following steps:]

  1. Access the LVA Digital Land Records Page [Click Here]
  2. Select Land Office Patents and Grants Database.
  3. Set Search Type to [Name] and enter the Last Name of the family you are researching.
  4. Select the [Start] button.
  5. Click on a name in the results screen.
  6. Then click on the NUMBER of the associated document you wish to view - not the name!
  7. To view the document a TIFF viewer must be installed on your computer - to download a TIFF viewer [Click Here]
  8. To view the document select the item in the Multimedia row at the top.
  9. Then click on the document thumbnail marked "Retrieve Document"
  10. Document is displayed - and also saved to the Temp folder of your hard drive for future off-line reviewing

By Virginia County:  [Complete the following steps:]

  1. Access the LVA Digital Land Records Page [Click Here]
  2. Select Land Office Patents and Grants Database.
  3. Set Search Type to [Subject] and enter the name of the county you are interested in.
  4. Select the [Start] button.
  5. Click on the county name in the results screen.
  6. Then click on the NUMBER of the associated family land grant document you wish to view.
  7. To view the document a TIFF viewer must be installed on your computer - to download a TIFF viewer [Click Here]
  8. To view the document select the item in the Multimedia row at the top.
  9. Then click on the document thumbnail marked "Retrieve Document"
  10. Document is displayed - and also saved to the Temp folder of your hard drive for future off-line reviewing
