Author L M Sutter to visit BCPL for book signing
L M Sutter; author of "Ball, Bat and Bitumen"; will be signing
copies of her book at the Buchanan County Public Library on
Thursday June 4, 2009 at 6pm. This book explores the coalfield
baseball teams from 1900 to the 1950's. These teams enlivened
life throughout southwest Virginia with many coal companies
fielding teams comprised of gifted amateurs and professional
baseball ringers. Ms. Sutter's book is part of the contributions
to Southern Appalachian Studies series and contains many
photographs on the coalfield teams. Much of the information is
based on interviews with players and their families as well as
contemporary resources. The Friends of the Library will be

Job Opening
The Buchanan County Public Library is seeking a full time
Library Assistant. Duties will include circulation desk
responsibilities, shelving, serials, general clerical tasks, and
other duties as assigned by the director. Hours will include
evenings and Saturdays as needed.
Requirements: High School diploma or GED but Associates degree
preferred, good oral and written communication skills, customer
service experience, experience with the Microsoft Office Suite
and good general computer skills,
ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds,
knowledge of authors and books helpful. This is a salaried
position with benefits. The Buchanan County Public Library is an

Tim Lewis will be visiting BCPL on Monday, March 23rd 2009 to
read from his book "The Virginiad" - a people's history of
Virginia written in poetry. "The Virginiad" is a collection of
original poems spanning the entire 400 year history of Virginia,
from the viewpoint of tenant farmers, indentured servants,
slaves, factory workers, and craftsmen and women as they live
out our history. |

National Gaming Day
Saturday November 15th, 2008 is the American Library
Association's first annual National Gaming Day. On this day
libraries across the nation will be attempting to set a record
for the most people playing the board game Pictureka! on
the same day. BCPL will also have several board games and
computer games available to play, as well as Rock Band and other
video games. All ages are welcome, door prizes will be awarded

Corduroy the Bear to visit BCPL!
Corduroy the Bear, from the books by Don Freeman, will be in the
library during the week of November 10th. Corduroy
and Miss Kathy will entertain children at story times and they
will also visit with children from the Buchanan County Schools
who will come on field trips to BCPL. |

SVCC Toy Display
On Tuesday, November 4th the Occupational Therapy
assistant Students from SVCC will display age appropriate and
developmentally appropriate toys for parents and children to
see and learn about. SVCC students will explain the value of the
toys and parents can get ideas about what toys are best for
their child. Annette Looney, SVCC Instructor, will be available
to speak with parents. |

Read
The Buchanan County Public Library is pleased to
announce this year's Community Read selection: "The Heart is a
Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers. Set in a small southern town
during the Great Depression, this touching novel explores the
intersection of five characters and their attempts at a more
fulfilling life. We encourage everyone to stop by the library,
find a copy, or ask a Book & Film Club member how to acquire a
copy of this book. The Buchanan County Public Library will be
hosting a 1930's party on Thursday May 15th, 2008 at 6pm to
discuss the book and to celebrate the South during this time

Book Talk by Wendy Lewkowicz

All teens are invited to hear local author Wendy Lewkowicz talk about her dream of writing
a book for teens. She
grew
up in Troutville, Virginia, and later became a 7th grade English teacher
in Texas. She now lives in Wise, Virginia with her husband and children. Her former students
inspired her writing of the novel THE GIRL WHO ALMOST HAD IT ALL. Refreshments will be served and
limited copies of her book will be for sale.

"Southwest Virginia Crossroads is an illustrated history and
guide which features Buchanan County as it's first chapter, and
a picture of the Garden Hole at Breaks Interstate park on it's
cover. Joe Tennis is a columnist and award-winning features
writer for the Bristol Herald Courier who "wrote this book to
prove the state did not stop in Roanoke". Join us as Joe speaks about his book which he compares to a "history
book with road directions", including stories of mills, spring
resorts, old post offices, mining camps and logging towns; as
well as locations for 50 waterfalls, 26 lakes, scenic rivers,
fishing holes, hiking trails, parks and historic landmarks. The
book also contains 138 original photos and 39 maps. |
