Your Library Card
Getting a card, renewing materials, placing holds, etc.
Who can get a card
Library cards are issued to residents of Virginia at no charge with proof of identification and current mailing address. Out of State patrons are charged a fifty percent deposit on all items checked out with a limit of five items. Patrons from adjacent out of state counties (Pike KY and McDowell WV) will have this requirement waived after three months if they have established a good patron record within that time period.
Juvenile cards are issued to children between 5 and 14 years of age with parent or guardian present to sign the registration card accepting responsibility for the library material and to produce identification for the child.
Young adults between 15 and 18 years of age with learners permits, drivers licenses, or proper identification may receive a library card without a parent or guardian being present.
How to Get Your Card
Come in with a driver’s license or DMV identification card. Other forms of identification accepted are social security cards, birth certificates or passports with additional proof of address such as a postmarked letter mailed to you at your current address. In general we accept the same forms of identification accepted by the DMV.
Replacement Cards: 1-2 — $1.00
3-5 — $3.00
6+ — $5.00
Borrowing Limits
New card holders are limited to two items. Once those items are returned, patrons may have a total of 20 items charged at one time.
Of that 20, 5 items may be VHS tapes or DVDs.
Videos and DVD’s may only be checked out by patrons over 18.
Placing Holds
The Buchanan County Public Library will place a hold on any print material we have that is currently checked out. If a hold is placed on an item, the patron who has the item checked out will not be able to renew the item and you will be called once the item returns to the library.
You may access your library account through our library catalog and place a hold online.
These are the steps you need to follow:
1. Go to our library catalog.
2. Search for the item you are looking for.
3. If the item is checked out, click on the “I Need Material” link.
4. Click on the Place Hold link.
5. Type in your user or alternate user id and your pin number.
6. Click the Place a Hold link.
A screen should appear with your name, identification numbers and Hold(s) Placed. If it does not, contact us.
You may also place holds on checked out print material by calling us at 276-935-5721 or by coming to our circulation desk and asking if you can place a hold.
Renewing Your Borrowed Items
Buchanan County Public Library patrons may renew items checked out on their account one time in person, by telephone, or online. This will extend the due date by two weeks. Videos, DVD’s, and items on hold for other patrons do not renew and will be due by the original due date.
To renew in person or by telephone, ask for a renewal. The circulation person will need your name, telephone number, and often the number from the back of your library card.
To renew online, go to our library catalog. You will need your library card and pin number.
1. Click on My Account.
2. Click on Renew My Materials.
3. Type in your library card number from the back of your library card or type in your alternate id number.
4. Type in your PIN number.
5. Click on List Charged Items.
6. Select items to Renew or Renew All.
7. Click on Renew Selected Items.
8. Screen listing item(s) renewed and new due date will appear.
9. Click OK.
10. Logout.
Library Fines
Patrons will be charged .05 cents per day per item overdue unless the item is a video or DVD, in which case patrons will be charged $1.00 per item per day overdue.
Patrons will be charged for damages to items equal to the cost of repair. If an item is damaged beyond repair, the patron will be charged current list price or a reasonable replacement cost (as determined by the library director), overdue fines if any, and a processing fee of $2.00.
